πŸ“š Week 03 Lab - Preparation

Author

This week, we will start to use a lot of different tools. Ensure you have everything installed and ready to go before the lecture and the lab sessions.

Part I - The essentials

In case you didn’t follow all the steps in the πŸ“‹ Getting Ready page at the start of this course:

  1. Install VS Code installed on your computer.

  2. Ensure you have miniconda (or Anaconda) installed on your computer.

Part II - Git and GitHub

Now, also do the following:

  1. Create a GitHub account

  2. Then, sign up for the GitHub Student Developer Pack for free access to a lot of cool stuff.

You will be asked to provide proof that you are a student. You can use your LSE email address for this. It typically takes a few days to get approved. You won’t get in trouble if you don’t receive approval before the lecture. See the section below for what to do in that case.

  3. Install Git on your computer.

Part III - A Graphical User Interface (GUI) for Git

  1. The next depends on whether you were granted access to the GitHub Student Developer Pack.

    • If your GitHub Student account has been approved, install the GitLens extension in VS Code. (preferred)

    • Otherwise, install GitHub Desktop on your computer.

Part IV - Live Share

  1. Install Microsoft Live Share extension in VS Code.

This extension will allow you to see and interact with what I type in VS Code during the lecture.

GENIAL participants

This lab is part of the GENIAL project.

If you are taking part in the student and never accessed ChatGPT before, you must create an account.

Click on chat.openai.com and sign up with your email address (it doesn’t have to be your LSE email address).
