This week, we’ll look data visualisation!

πŸ“– Class Preparation

Complete the following activities before attending the seminar. You’ll share your findings with the class.

Collect your own examples:

  • Find one data visualization you think is well done (from news, social media, reports, etc.)

  • Find one data visualization you think is poorly done or misleading

  • Come prepared to discuss these in class

πŸ—³οΈ Vote on Slack:

  • Post your two examples in the class Slack channel before the seminar. Include your brief explanations

  • Look at what your classmates have shared and up vote on the examples you find to be most compelling

  • The most popular best and worst visualisation will be discussed in class

πŸ€” Reflect:

  • Leo Tolstoy wrote in his classic work Anna Karenina that β€œAll happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” With this in mind, can you figure out the specific design principles that were adhered to or violated and develop your own typology of bad visualisations? This will form the basis of the discussion in the second half of the lab!
