💻 Week 03 - Class Roadmap (90 min)

Welcome to our second seminar/lab class of DS101L.

This week’s content is very hands-on. We will work with R Studio and R Markdown to explore data. You will see how data scientists use programming to make their work more efficient. Concretely, we will show you the wonders of the tidyverse package in R and how it is helpful for “data wrangling” and visualisation.

Step 01 - Setup (30 min)

• What is R? What is R Studio?
• Let’s install it. Follow these instructions
• Your class teacher will tell you about something called tidyverse

Step 02 - Reading data (15 min)

• Your class teacher will open a CSV file using R.
• Your class teacher will tell you how you can inspect data types (recall what we saw in 🧑‍🏫 Week 02)

Step 03 - Data Pre-processing (45 min)

Time to discuss your tidy data!

• Share your CSVs with others on Slack’s #topic-programming channel.
• In groups, discuss how you collected data from Wikipedia and how your tidy data representations diverge.
• Your class teacher will demonstrate how one could use tidyverse to clean up data and make it tidy.
